In the lead-up to the 2024 NZNBL season, Taranaki Airs, under the guidance of head coach Sam Mackinnon, have been hard at work assembling a roster packed with promising talents from both local and international scenes. Today, the team is elated to reveal the signing of Flynn Cameron, who will be carrying on the Cameron family's basketball legacy in New Zealand.

Coach Mackinnon expressed his immediate interest in recruiting Flynn upon taking on the coaching role. Having a history with the Cameron family, Mackinnon spoke about coaching against Flynn and Tobias for the Brisbane Capitals in junior competitions and recruiting Flynn to the Bullets. He emphasized Flynn's potential as an emerging point guard, acknowledging the need for some skill refinement but highlighting his impressive size and readiness to make a mark at the senior level in both the Tall Blacks and the NZNBL/NBL. Mackinnon expressed his satisfaction with securing Flynn, especially given the player's connections to the Cameron basketball lineage.

While still serving as an Assistant Coach with the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the Australian NBL, Mackinnon is pleased with the initial signings, aiming to instill a culture of community engagement and a commitment to personal development among the players. He stressed the importance of a well-balanced mix from the start, assuring fans, members, and corporate partners that the Airs would strive for excellence in all aspects of their game.

The inclusion of Flynn marks a significant stride forward for the Airs, as they aim to build a formidable roster and a winning culture. As the son of Kiwi legend Pero Cameron, Flynn inherits elite traits from his father. With a successful track record, including a commendable World Cup campaign with the Tall Blacks and stints in the NBL, Queensland State League, and U.S. College basketball system, Flynn brings a wealth of experience to the Airs squad.

Coach Mackinnon eagerly anticipates taking the reins of the Airs and working closely with Flynn. He envisions Flynn becoming a long-standing member of the Tall Blacks, expressing his commitment to developing all aspects of Flynn's game to ensure he reaches the pinnacle of his potential.

The Taranaki Steelformers Airs are set to kick off the 2024 season against the Manawatu Jets on March 30th. The addition of Flynn Cameron adds an extra layer of excitement to the team's prospects for the upcoming season.
