As we navigate the exciting NZ NBL Free Agency period, our head coach, Sam Mackinnon, has been hard at work securing talent for the upcoming 2024 season. Today, we are overjoyed to announce that Tobias Cameron is making a triumphant return to the Taranaki Airs.
“Tobias, he brings it everyday" Mackinnon said when asked about Tobias recently. "I've seen from afar the last years in college and just the way he competes, is what I like about Tobias.” Mackinnon added.
Mackinnon, who is also serving as an Assistant Coach with the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the Australian NBL, is pleased with the signings, aiming to cultivate a culture that prioritizes community engagement and the holistic development of our players.
“It’s important that we get the mix right from the outset, and that the players coming to play with the Airs are aware that we will work extremely hard in all facets of our game, on and off-court. Whether it’s working in the community, in the gym or on-court, Airs fans, members and our corporate partners can rest assured we will be committed to and aspiring for excellence at all times.” emphasized Mackinnon.
Tobias's return marks a significant step for us as we strive to build a robust roster and a winning culture. We're particularly excited to have the son of Kiwi legend Pero Cameron back, joining forces with his younger brother Flynn to bring depth and promise to our team.
Tobias is returning to the Airs, where he made a mark in his successful rookie season, averaging nearly 8 points per game. After completing a remarkable five-year college career at Abilene Christian University, he brings with him a stellar record of 142 games in Men's NCAA Division 1 Basketball.
Looking ahead to leading the Airs, Mackinnon is eager to collaborate closely with Tobias, recognizing him as a player who adds significant depth to our wings. ""He'll always give you a 100% effort and I think just getting his feet wet last year, maybe 8 games with the Airs, he's another returning player that gives us depth in the wings and for someone looking to make that jump. Having Tobias on board is another key signing for the club" affirmed Mackinnon.
Get ready, Airs fans! We're gearing up for the 2024 season opener against the Manawatu Jets on March 30th, and with Tobias back in the lineup, it's bound to be an exhilarating journey.
